The topic of AI in game development led me to ask Chat GPT to help me plan a fantasy survival horror game. The results were so good I may actually be making this game and after a suggestion from Discord, I may be making it in Godot 4.

Given my recent struggles running the ARC A770 on Linux Josh suggested I try Fedora 38. Ultimately, we're putting our faith in Linux 6.4...

Our first live episode in a little while, we're going to talk about Josh's retro gaming setup and how Bo plans to max out his credit card on Black Friday.

In this episode of Crowbar Kernel Panic, we're talking about retro gaming and the current state of GPUs and black Friday. Does it make sense to buy a new GPU? What is the best Retro gaming emulator? And is it time to reinstate the CRT monitor?

Fedora 36

• I finally ditched Windows and only have Fedora installed on my laptop
• I have Fedora installed to my 500gb ssd and I created a raid 0 between my 2 nvme drives to put all my games on.
• I had to fix a permission issue before I could install any games to the mount point. I set the permission on the btrfs subvolume to 770 so that my user and group have full access to the mount. I made sure to give no permissions to everyone so that it's a little more secure.
• After setting those permissions I could install all my games and play them.
• Jedi Fallen order works fine now I can pause the game and resume and it plays normally.
• Horizon zero dawn can now use dlss.
• One issue I am still having is very strange. I could open the steam flatpak via the app icon totally normally until I set my nvidia gpu as the primary active gpu. After that I now have to use the flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam command to start steam. When switching back to intel/nvidia or just intel gpu the app icon can start steam again.
• Wayland was a no go for any of my games so I am back on Xorg. Other than games though, wayland has come a long way and works with all my other applications.

Nobara Project 36
My attempt at upgrading failed. NP documented a fix to allow for a successful process but after completion there were too many issues with the nvidia kernel to make it worth sticking with the installation. I opted for reinstalling.

Distro Testing

Linux Mint the clear winner
I have been testing a ton of games with a ton of distros lately on my new laptop and the results speak for themselves Linux Mint just came out on top.

Games I tested

• Horizon Zero Dawn - There was a fix for the messed up grass and sound crackling during my testing so I went back and tested this one again and is now actually mostly playable on every distro except Garuda and ZorinOS.
• Witcher 3 - This game had a lot of stuttering under anything but Linux Mint.
• Metro Exodus (Linux Native and Proton) - Linux Native was not playable on any Distro I tried due to being half cut off of my screen or severe stuttering. Proton on the other hand was not too bad for the most part but Linux Mint still was the smoothest.
• Halo CE Anniversary - Played mostly smoothly with some stuttering on the arch distros but was totally playable on all the Ubuntu distros.
• Splitgate - Has some general Linux issues when comparing it to Windows but is playable on Linux with over 200 FPS on my system just some stuttering issues.
• Valhimne - Playable on all distros except Garuda.
• Project Zomboid (This game ran fine everywhere I tested probably due to low system requirements)

Arch Distros I tried

• Manjaro - Was mostly fine but had some glaring issues such as multi monitor issues and gaming performance issues.
• Endeavor - had some fairly deal breaking bugs like OBS and Screenshots not working with Plasma and generally more stuttering than on most other distros.
• Garuda - Just plain didn’t work out of the box with its dragonized plasma desktop.

Ubuntu Distros I tried

• Ubuntu Gnome 21.10 - This statement goes for all but Mint but basically stuttering was very prevalent on all distros except Mint. Other issues I had were getting optimus to work properly.
• Kubuntu 21.10 - Other issues I had were, games not popping up on the right screens I wanted and super + shift + arrow keys did not help.
• FerenOS - Same kinda issue as Kubuntu with games not working on the right screen
• Zorin OS 16 - Extreme stuttering in most games even with graphics set to low
• Linux Mint 20.3 - Once vulkan shaders were compiled ( which I allowed every distro to compile that I tried) The games ran smoothly with little to no stutters or slowdowns. Even my laptop fans are controlled correctly on mint out of the box. Caveat to that is I do have to set the speed profiles under windows but once thats set mint uses the correct settings.

Parsec Cloud Gaming Service

It works on Windows, Mac, Android, Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi 3.
You can stream using your gaming PC or Parsec’s server.
A minimum requirement of 30 Mbps internet speed is required to run Parsec.
It is generally available freely, however depending on the usage you can be charged hourly.
Maximum display output can be of any resolution theoretically.
Server status page! This is a great feature that all services should have.
You can host this yourself but only on windows.
Pay per hour as far as pricing goes. I could only find a reddit post from 3 years ago saying 0.65$ an hour.

Google Stadia

4k 100mbps for smooth play
1080p 50mbps for smooth play
720p 30mbps for smooth play
Google Stadia runs without any lag or latency issues on Chromium based browsers.
If you unsubscribe and resubscribe again, you will be able to gain back all the pro games they purchased.
Crowd Play is possible using Google Stadia and users from a live stream can join the game.
It works on Chromium based browsers (such as Brave, Vivoldi, and yes now even Edge), Chrome OS, Chromecast Ultra and any Smartphone.
